They provide a useful interactive tool to communicate often complex geological relationships to other scientists and the wider community. 273

The Thames Gateway Project The Thames Gateway Region consists of a 40-mile stretch of land along the River Thames. It is the focus for the biggest building programme to be undertaken in the UK for over 50 years with close to 200,000 new homes to be built. This new interdisciplinary project has been launched to focus on making geoscience information for the Thames Gateway more accessible, relevant and understandable to the wide range of users involved in the sustainable regeneration and development of the Gateway. 239

GSI Modelling Application: A short introduction on the technical background of GSI3D The Geological Surveying and Investigation in 3 Dimensions (GSI3D) software tool and methodology has been developed by Dr. Hans Georg Sobisch (currently at the Geological Institute of Quaternary at the University of Cologne) over the last decade in part in collaboration with NLfB (Niedersaechsisches Landesamt fuer Bodenforschung; Soil and Geological Survey of Lower Saxony) (namely Dr. Carsten Hinze and Mr. Heinrich Mengeling in Hanover. Over the past 2-3 1/2 years BGS has acted as a test bed for the accelerated development of the tool and methodology.

Geological 3D Spatial Model of Halle (Saale) The geological 3D spatial model of the City of Halle (Saale) results from a cooperative effort between the Specialist Group Hydro and Environmental Geology, Martin Luther University, and the City of Halle (Saale), Environmental Specialist Group. The spatial model was constructed with GIS3D (Pohlert, 2005; Schlesier, 2006); the transfer to a Subsurface Viewer will be accomplished in cooperation with the firm lithospere Ltd. & Co KG, Cologne (© INSIGHT, Cologne). 264

3D GEOSCIENCE MODELS AND THEIR DELIVERY TO CUSTOMERS Over the past few years, the creation of systematic three dimensional (3D) geological subsurface models has become standard practice of national Geological Surveys. The methods for construction of 3D models are well documented (e.g. Hinze et al., 1999; Sobisch, 2000; Kessler et al., 2004) and software tools like GSI3D (Geological Surveying and Investigation in 3 Dimensions; ©INSIGHT Geologische Softwaresysteme GmbH) use section-building techniques that are familiar to all geologists. (Kessler and Mathers, 2004) 318

Integrated decision support using GSI3D at the EU-Project: NORISC NORISC was developed into an integrated user-friendly tool for all stakeholders concerning more generally the contaminated site management. A multifunctional decision support system (NORISC DSS) was provided that makes handling of investigation results more efficient standardising and visualising the data, as well as transferring them into common GIS systems. Moreover, the NORISC DSS assists risk assessment and evaluation of revitalisation options for a really comprehensive elucidation of site reclamation alternatives. These functions were integrated into a common NORISC interface in a modular way, allowing for their optional use. 237

Lithosphere - applied 3d geological surveying Interdisciplinary consultancy providing a wide variety of services for the development of 3D information systems, based on 3D geological - technogenic subsurface models. The visualisation, modelling, and analysis of geology and the man-made subsurface with optimised stand-alone GSI3D software solutions provides decision and planing support for the sustainable management of natural resources. 263

Geosum3D: Geoscience in 3 Dimensions Geoscience in 3D. An interdisciplinary research group on subsurface modelling. 304

The Subsurface Geology of Brussels, Belgium, Is Modeled with 3D GIS From an administrative point of view, a single area with a surface of 162 km2 for the 19 communes of Brussels, Belgium, was established in July 1971. This was known as the "Agglomeration" of Brussels and had authority in the areas of town and country planning, transport, safety, public health and cleanliness, economic expansion, etc. Since June 18, 1989, the Brussels-Capital Region has been an autonomous region comparable to the Flemish and Walloon regions.... 283

Erweiterte 3-D Visualisierungs-Software Dr. Alexander Neber, unseren Lesern aus einigen Artikeln der letzten Zeit wohl bekannt (z. B. RUNDBRIEF Nr. 60, S. 13 ff.; Geotechnik 2005/2, S. 93 ff.), teilt mit, dass... 264

A picture of Britain: 3D technology to generate unseen images of Britain’s geology At its headquarters in Keyworth, UK, the British Geological Survey (BGS) is using 3D technology to generate unseen images of Britain’s geology. In one of its rooms, it is possible to walk through Britain’s calcite deposits, follow its coal seams, and dodge the granite swings. 249

3D Models are Making Cents. When it Comes to Money, Investors Like What They See....   Rare is the financier who can look at a 2D map and visualize the pertinent data in three dimensions. But when a 3D model is available, the folks who deal with capital can better understand complex geological concepts by actually seeing fault closure, stratigraphic traps and such, thereby leaving less to the imagination. 264
