Current studies in the southeastern part of Cologne focus on a 60 kmē area in the east of the Cologne/Bonn airport and the districts of Porz and Rodenkirchen in the west (Fig. 1). A 3 dimensional model of the cenozoic stratigraphic sequence was established with the GSI3D methodology and the software tool GSI3D version 1.5.

Being object to geological studies the time slice from the upper Pliocene till the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene in the Lower Rhine Embayment bears many investigation sites of international importance, not the least concerning the T/Q boundary. 
Besides the classical area for research on this subject near Venlo/NL, situated on Peel Block, the current project is concentrated on the large browcoal pits of Tagebau Inden (Rur Valley Graben) and Tagebau Hambach (Erft Block). This approach enables us to integrate interpretations concerning fine stratigraphical as well as paleogeographical problems on a larger scale and in respect to diverging tectonical settings.
